Mattress sizes
Choosing the right mattress size is essential to ensure that the mattress fits the bed and the slatted frame and works exactly as hoped: comfortable, cozy and sleep-promoting. If the mattress is too small, the urge to move around at night is restricted, which affects sleep.
Find out below what mattress sizes there are and what you need to consider when choosing the right mattress size.
What mattress sizes are available?
Mattresses are available at Matratzen Discount in a wide range of sizes - for good reason. With our huge selection of mattress sizes, we are sure to have the right mattress for every body size and bed size, for singles and couples and every type of sleeper. We have summarized everything you need to know about the different mattress sizes in our guide to mattress sizes.

What is the height of a mattress?
The height of a mattress is often confused with the height of the mattress. While the mattress height describes the actual height of the mattress, measured from the edge of the underside to the top edge of the mattress, the height of the mattress base strictly speaking describes the total height of all bed elements that are covered with a fitted sheet. This can be just the mattress, but also a mattress with an additional topper, mattress protector, etc. Standard mattresses have a height of 10 to 20 cm.

What does density mean for mattresses?
The density, or RG for short, is a good indication of the quality and durability of a foam mattress. The RG value indicates (in kg) how much raw mass of the foam used as filling is present in one cubic meter (m³) of the mattress. Sounds complicated? It's not! If the mattress has a particularly low density, it is light and airy. A higher density indicates more filling material in the mattress, which is an indicator of greater dimensional stability and a longer lifespan. Stiftung Warentest recommends a density of at least 40 for foam mattresses.
Sleeping positions & sleeping habits
Even the best mattress can only play to its strengths if it suits you and your sleeping position. What type of sleeper are you? There are basically three different sleeping positions:
- Side sleeper
- stomach sleeper
- Back sleeper
Depending on the sleeping position, the mattress must provide different levels of support so that the body is not too hard or too soft and the spine is optimally relieved.
Firmness & comfort
Pay attention when buying a mattress - the firmness level (abbreviated H) describes the firmness of a mattress. The firmness of the mattress has a significant influence on how you feel when lying on it and can play a key role in how comfortably you sleep on the mattress. The recommended firmness level is based on your personal body weight and height. Tall and heavy people need more support than short and light people. The right mattress firmness level ensures that the body is optimally supported during sleep without sinking too deeply into the mattress or lying too hard.
Tip: Reversible mattresses with two different firmness levels reduce the risk of making the wrong purchase. Most mattresses with a firmness level H2 and firmness level H3 are comfortable and suitable even if you have gained or lost a lot of weight.
What does firmness level 2 mean for mattresses?
Firmness level H2: 60-80 kg
Firmness grade H2 is a rather soft mattress for people with a body weight of 60-80 kg and a maximum height of around 165 cm.
Together with H3 mattresses, H2 mattresses are among the most popular mattress types.
What does firmness level 3 mean for mattresses?
Firmness level H3: 80-100 kg
Mattresses with firmness grade H3 are among the best-selling mattresses, as they are not too soft and not too firm and provide a comfortable lying sensation. H3 mattresses are often also available as a reversible mattress with H2 and H3.
What does firmness level 4 mean for mattresses?
Firmness level H4: from 100 kg
The firmness level H4 offers people over 100 kg body weight optimum support and pleasant lying comfort.
What does firmness level 5 mean for mattresses?
Firmness level H5: from 150 kg
H5 mattresses are the best choice for a body weight of 150 kg or more, as the spine must be relieved as much as possible by a particularly firm mattress at such a high weight.
Mattress zones
The task of a mattress is to provide optimum support for the body during sleep and to support the spine in its natural curvature. To ensure that all parts of the body, such as the heavy hip area and the comparatively light legs, are optimally supported, our high-quality foam mattresses have different support zones with varying degrees of firmness or softness. There are typically 7 zones that provide individual support for the head, shoulders, back, pelvis, hips and legs. This ensures an ergonomic sleeping position and prevents tension and back pain. Find out more about the benefits of Mattresses with 7 lying zones.
Mattress material & filling
Sleep better and healthier - it's what's inside that counts. With the right mattress filling, you can prevent problems in the back or shoulder area, relieve tension and pain or sweat less at night.
Allergy sufferers beware: Allergy triggers such as house dust mites can also be reduced by choosing the right mattress filling and mattress cover to help you get back to undisturbed sleep - without allergy symptoms.
Health aspects
Back pain and tension are considered a widespread disease. However, many back problems can be alleviated or even completely eliminated by choosing a suitable massage. Pain in the back, neck or throat area is often the direct result of a mattress that is too hard or too soft and does not provide sufficient support. If you often fall asleep or wake up in pain, we have something for you. In our Infocenter you will find everything you need to know about the right mattress for health problems.

Thanks to the compression described above, we can conveniently send our mattresses throughout Europe as a parcel via DHL or GLS. For you, this means no unnecessary running around and significantly less effort. The mattress is delivered directly to your door.
How long do the mattresses have to be on display?
Once the new mattress has arrived, all you have to do is unpack it, roll it out and air it out for approx. 48 to 72 hours. We have explained what you need to bear in mind in our guide "The new mattress is here" summarized.
Why do new mattresses stink?
Does your new mattress smell a bit strong after unpacking? Don't worry, it is perfectly normal for foam mattresses to smell unpleasant after unpacking. The chemical odor arises during the manufacturing process, but it is by no means a cause for concern or even harmful to health. The smell dissipates very quickly if the mattress is aired well.
What happens to returned mattresses?
We give every mattress a second chance. Especially if the customer sends it back to us because they have changed their mind or have chosen the wrong size mattress. Returned mattresses are carefully checked at Matratzen Discount and then offered at greatly reduced prices in the Matratzen Discount outlet, depending on their condition.
